The MMDA in keeping with its aims of ensuring the welfare of these special little donkeys and to assist breeders and pet owners, requests members to breed the best possible donkeys, while preserving their unique beauty and character, and of promoting the best possible care of these donkeys adopts the following:
1. Members shall strive for perfection and breed only for the specific purpose of improving the breed. In this regard they shall:
a. Keep animals in a good physical condition, only keeping such numbers that can be properly cared for.
b. Ensure that all breeding stock is free from contagious disease and any obvious hereditary problems.
c. Refrain from breeding a jenny before her 3rd birthday. Refrain from using a jack before his 3rd birthday, although he may be tried at 2
d. Breeders should only use veterinary inspected stallions on their jennys
2. Provide proper shelter for their stock
3. Geld the majority of jack foals
4. Members will not sell stock without true representation to the purchaser and will not use misleading or untruthful statements in selling or advertising.
5. Register all donkeys before they leave your farm. And provide prospective owners with information of up to date vaccinations and worming history
6. Provide purchasers with information on the requirements and care of the donkey and follow up as necessary
7. Provide a properly fitted halter and lead at point of sale
8. Members are expected to promote the association and encourage other members. Any member bringing the Association into disrepute or denigrating another member or member’s donkeys, will be asked to leave the Association forthwith.
Buyers should seek out breeders who adhere to the above principles and thereby demonstrate their responsibilities to both the buyer and the breed.
